The Main Reasons For Hair Loss in Men and Women

Posted by IHLS

If you’ve noticed your hair is looking thinner than it once was, don’t worry, you are not alone!

As we get older, hair fall is a very common problem for both men and women. Hair loss can be caused by a multitude of reasons. Knowledge Is power so here are some of the reasons your hair might be falling, and the solutions to grow your hair back stronger than ever!

The Main Reasons For Hair Loss in Men and Women

Genetics
Male and Female pattern baldness, also known as androgenetic alopecia, affects nearly 50% of both males and females.

Androgenetic alopecia occurs in both males and females, but it presents itself differently. Males will see a receding hairline and thinning around the crown, whereas females will see thinning all throughout the top of the hair usually starting after menopause.

A large factor to weather you will experience androgenetic alopecia will be down to genetics. Male and female pattern baldness is caused by your body’s reaction to androgens. This response is passed down by your parent’s genetics. If your mother or father has thinning hair, chances are you will too.

Impacts of Testosterone
Testosterone is an Androgen produced in both males and females naturally. Androgens are sex hormones and they help people enter puberty and mature physically.

Normally, female hormones (e.g. oestrogens) balance out male hormones. Female Pattern Baldness (FPB) is most common in women in their 50’s and 60’s as menopause affects the hormone levels in the body, causing Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) to begin the cycle of miniaturization which eventually leads to very fine hair throughout the scalp; however, it’s possible for FPB to appear at any age.

Male pattern baldness (MPB) starts happening when hair follicles on the top of the head, get affected by DHT causing them to shrink and stop producing hair over time. This cycle happens earlier in men than it does in females, as there is no naturally produced hormone that slows down the effects of DHT.

This miniaturization of the follicle leads to a shorter growth phase, causing hair to shed earlier and regrow thinner and weaker. Therefore, the hair becomes flatter, less pigmented, and more transparent.

Hygiene
The sebaceous gland, located on the hair follicle produces sebum, which can carry high levels of DHT and testosterone. It’s believed that this DHT could seep into the follicle, contributing to or worsening hair loss, particularly in androgenetic alopecia.

To handle this, use scalp-cleansing products that detoxify the scalp to help reduce the amount of DHT on the surface. Many hair loss treatments focus on this idea, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a balanced scalp pH to prevent accelerated hair loss and shedding.

Stress
And of course, stress is equally relevant for both men and women. Telogen effluvium is caused by significant stress, which pushes the hair follicles into a resting phase much faster than normal. Sometimes it is hard to manage stress, and the hair loss just makes it worse. Lucky telogen effluvium is reversible, so by taking time to relax, your hair will thank you!

Lack Of Nutrients
Our hair skin and nails are the last organs in our bodies to get nutrients, so the best way to keep our hair healthy is feeding it with a healthy high vegetable and protein diet. If you aren’t eating well, it makes hair growth a lot harder.

The health of your hair comes from within, so the best way to ensure your hair stays thick and strong is supplying it with the right nutrients. A lot of hair loss we see at IHLS is caused by a lack of certain nutrients, so taking a high quality supplement specifically designed for healthy hair, is key.

Whatever the reason is for your hair loss, getting to the root cause, will help you find the best cause for your hair loss.

How Biotin and Collagen Aid in Hair Loss Prevention.

Biotin
As per different studies, Biotin (Vitamin B7) can prevent hair loss in different ways. This vitamin promotes keratin production, strengthens hair follicles, and improves scalp circulation.

It also supports the absorption of essential nutrients that are required for hair growth. Some studies also claim that taking a biotin supplement in the right quantity improves the thickness of the hair. Eggs, nuts, seeds, and legumes are good sources of Biotin.

Collagen
Collagen, a key structural protein in our body, is equally needed like Biotin to stop hair loss. Collagen is significant for maintaining strong and healthy hair. This component supplies the essential amino acids that are required for keratin production. Essential amino acids like proline, glycine, and hydroxyproline are present in collagen and are required for hair loss prevention.

This antioxidant effect in collagen is beneficial as free radical damage is linked to aging and environmental stressors that impact hair health. Collagen also supports the dermis, the middle layer of skin where hair roots are anchored, contributing to skin elasticity and reducing hair thinning associated with aging.
Although direct studies on collagen’s impact on hair growth are limited, research indicates that collagen supplements can enhance skin elasticity and reduce signs of aging, which could indirectly benefit hair health.

Like Biotin the direct impact of collagen on hair loss prevention is under research. You can include collagen in your diet through different ways like bone broth, collagen powders, and supplements, and is also found in animal connective tissues.
